As I write this, the heat is stifling, and makes me think that we’ll have a warm
Autumn (I realise that this may lack logic!), and have selected wines, which on the
whole are light, and have a strong hint of Late summer. Also, I have included four
wines which are relatively unknown.
Lunetta Rosé N.V.
A fizzy rosé is perfect for leisurely evenings in my assumed balmy Autumn. This is very similar in style to Prosecco, of which I’m a
fan,and I think it’s quite classy. A blend of chardonnay, merlot and teraldego (most people haven’t heard of either!), it is dry, very
pale in colour, with very pleasant red fruit flavours. Well worth £9.15 per bottle.
Pecorino Caparione Colline ‘Pescarese’ 2017
And now for something different.....The pecorino grape variety is relatively new on the global wine scheme- this is
the only one I’ve ever tasted -, but it is a very old varietal that has only been officially recognised (IGT) .since 2001.
It is very well balanced, just off-dry, and should be ideal with fish or Risotto. Fine value, at £9.70 per bottle.
Hecht & Bannier Languedoc Blanc 2015
Languedoc wines have come on in leaps and bounds over the last decade, and H.&B. Are one of the regions finest
innovators. This blend of piquepoul blanc and roussanne gives a floral wine , with attractive citrus fruits on the palate.
Excellent value at £8.70 per bottle.
Merlot Rosé ‘les Grains’ 2017
100% merlot is quite unusual for rose wines, but in this case produces an aromatic, but fresh tasting wine with
good red fruit and mineral overtones. Well worth £7.90 per bottle
Rioja Cosecha , Finca Manzanos, 2017
The exception to the light wins philosophy!.Made with 100% Tempranillo (for me, the finest red wine Spanish varietal),
this full-bodied wine is produced in the traditional Rioja manner, giving it fine fruits and a classical Rioja structure.
A real bargain at £7.60 per bottle.
Beaujolais Villages, Passot- Collonge 2016
For me , Beaujolais is the perfect red wine for warm weather imbibing. The Passot family have been producing wines
in Regnie-Durette for several generations, and Nethergate have imported them for 35 years. Light but crunchy fruit
abounds, A wine that never fails to please, at £8.30 per bottle.
