WINES FOR SPRING

As I write this, in early February, Spring is certainly on the way- snowdrops, even some daffodils are in
profusion! A new season calls for some imaginative, or at least unusual wines, so here are my suggestions.

Sauvignon de touraine “ la Noblette”, 2015 : Sauvignon blanc is a perennial favourite for many white wine aficionados, and there
is considerable evidence that this grape may have originated in the Touraine region. The wine is atypical of the grape,with fine
gooseberry flavours, and a pleasant citrus bite. Well worth a try at £8.25 the bottle

Reserve Domaine de Tariquet, 2014, : I have long felt that Gascony is an under-rated wine growing region, and this superb blend
of Gros Manseng, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier re-inforces my opinion!. The wine has appealing fruit, and
a charming complexity, and is ideal as an aperitif, or to accompany a wide range of dishes. Great value at £9.85 the bottle.

Bollini Merlot, Trentino, 2015 : I have greatly appreciated the Bollini range for more than thirty years, and their Merlot certainly
does not let the side down! It is surprisingly elegant, with lush fragrant flavours, and at 13% is a robust wine.
Very good value at £7.75 the bottle.

Finca Lara Crianza, Toro, 2011 : Tempranillo in Spain is sometimes known as Toro. This wine has been aged, before bottling for
two years, of which six months was in oak. I think it is now just about at its peak. Full of dark fruits, with a long and intense palate.
Good value at £7.95 the bottle.

Malbec Reserva Nieto Lujan de Cuyo, 2016 : Argentine Merlot is very much “a la mode” nowadays, but this a quite superior
example. A rather complex wine, it has a well-balanced finish, coupled with very smooth flavours of dark fruits and spices.
A very classy wine at £9.25 the bottle

Marselan Rosé, Domaine de Tariquet, 2016 : Marselan is a relatively new grape variety, only created in the last 50 years, by
crossing Cabernet Sauvignon with Grenache Noir. The tempting result has a light rose colour, with lovely red fruit flavours.
A salute to Spring at £8.35 the bottle.

SPARKLING WINE

A. Laurance brut, N/V : I think this is a quite delicious sparkler from the Loire Valley. It is rather elegant with gentle bubbles, and
a long fruity after-taste. It has been described (not by me!) as having lively fresh aromas of Granny Smith- presumably the apple!
Very good value at £8.50 the bottle.
