The Haverhill Arts centre is housed in a self contained
building at the far end of the High Street.
It is an attractive building with ornate brickwork in a style typical
of the late Victorian era. The building was originally built in 1884 and
donated to the people of Haverhill by the Gurteen family. The Arts centre
has an excellent set of facilities. There is a large auditorium that can
be used for demonstrations, music, theatre or films and there are also
discussion rooms for hire. For visitors there is a welcoming bar and a
well stocked restaurant/cafe. The cafe is open to visitors throughout
the day and is popular stopping point for shoppers.
The Arts centre organises many different activities and there is a full
calendar of events right through the year culminating in a week long Arts
Festival held each year in June. This festival sees the best of film,
theatre, music and entertainment and it also coincides with the Battle
of the Bands contest in which the best of the local bands fight it out
for the converted first prize.
Arts centre co-ordinator Nick Keeble said “ We put on a large number
of excellent acts throughout the year and we try to cater for all tastes,
especially with the music. There is something for everyone to enjoy”.
The Town Hall Arts centre is Sponsored by the Haverhill town council who
took responsibility for the development of arts in the town in 2004.
